DIRECTIONS: From Fort Lauderdale: Travel time approximately 1 hour & 15 minutes.
·
I-75 North (to Naples)
·
Watch the mile marker signs - at Mile Marker 62.4 you will see a large sign that says
"Rest Area Next Exit".
·
Take this exit to the Stop Sign
·
Turn left and go under the overpass (I-75)
·
Turn right into the Rest Area parking lot
·
Park by the communication tower (north east end of parking lot)
Note: The rest area has restrooms and vending machines (snacks & drinks)
WHAT TO WEAR:
·
Closed shoes required (sneakers are OK) (Do not need boots). Hiking shoes preferred.
There is a chance that there will be some water on the trail (perhaps a few inches -
depending on the amount of rain prior to the hike). So be prepared to get your feet wet.
Bring an extra pair of shoes and socks (if needed) to change into at the end of the hike.
·
Long pants are highly recommended (not shorts)
·
T-shirt/short sleeve shirt is OK. Recommend layering a long sleeve-button down shirt
over t-shirt. It might be a little cool in the AM, block the sun and prevent scratches from
the vegetation.
·
Walking stick/pole is suggested but not necessary. (Can use a broom/mop handle).
·
Hat
·
Bring sun screen & bug spray (just in case).
·
Suggest bringing a Rain poncho (inexpensive poncho at dollar store, grocery store or
large garbage bag).
·
A hiking/camping stool or plastic garbage bag to sit on the ground for the breaks.
REQUIREMENTS:
·
WATER (Minimum 2 quarts/64 ounces) per person. Each person must carry their
own water. The water is the most important item for the hike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
·
Snack(s) for during the hike (There will be a couple of short breaks during the hike -
suggest bringing snack to replenish your energy. Suggestions: fruit, trail mix, etc.)
Note: Cell phone reception is very poor in this section of Big Cypress.
